Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has confirmed that Karl Jakob Hein is fit and will start Sunday’s Bundesliga opener against Freiburg. The match in Breisgau will be played on 30th of August, with Hein set to return between the posts after recovering from a muscle problem.

The Estonia international missed Werder’s final pre-season friendly against Auxerre and the German Cup first-round victory over Lüneburger SK Hansa. Werder won that tie 3-0, with Alexander Schlager deputising in goal.

Karl no longer has any muscular problems, so he will be in goal on Sunday and go into the season as our number one,” Thioune said. “We know that Alex Schlager can also perform at the same level.”

Hein said he was looking forward to the start of the new campaign and welcomed the competition within Werder’s goalkeeping group. “The excitement before the start of the league season is always something special,” he told the club’s website. “I hope we can begin our league campaign with a strong result on Sunday.”

The 30th August fixture will kick off at 16:30 Estonian time.
