Tonybet Virslīga round 27 got underway with the Liepāja derby, where league top scorer Joseph Ede Oloko found the net at the start of both halves to reach the 20-goal milestone and lead FK Liepāja to their first victory over FK Grobiņa this season, winning 3-1.
Liepāja, who were playing their first competitive match in 12 days, welcomed Bruno Melnis back into the matchday squad for the first time since suffering a serious injury at the beginning of the season five months ago. The forward made his long-awaited return as a late second-half substitute. Grobiņa, meanwhile, came into the derby after Monday’s dramatic Latvian Cup defeat to FK Auda, where they lost in extra time following a match that featured multiple red cards.
Knowing a victory would lift them back into fourth place, Liepāja made the perfect start. Just 30 seconds into the match, Vladislavs Sorokins sent a long ball into space for Abiodun Ogunniyi, whose low cross across the six-yard box was turned home by Joseph Ede Oloko to score his 20th Virslīga goal of the season.
The early breakthrough was followed by a scrappy first half with few clear-cut opportunities. Grobiņa mainly threatened through long-range efforts that failed to trouble the hosts, while at the other end Roberts Ozols was called into action late in the half to deny an acrobatic effort from Sorokins.
Liepāja struck again immediately after the restart. Danila Patijčuks delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where Grobiņa centre-back Dāvids Družiņins attempted a diving clearance but handled the ball in the process. The referee pointed to the spot, and Oloko confidently converted the penalty to double the hosts’ advantage.
The second half was much more open, with both teams creating opportunities. Oladotun Olatunde-Matthews repeatedly threatened from distance for Grobiņa, while on the other end Oloko came within inches of completing his hat-trick after racing through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to see his effort strike the post.
Instead of extending their lead to three goals, Liepāja were briefly made to sweat. Former Liepāja winger Dodo produced a superb curling strike into the far corner after sustained Grobiņa pressure to halve the deficit and reignite hopes of a comeback.
Those hopes lasted only six minutes. In the 84th minute, Bart Straalman played an excellent through ball to Oloko, who unselfishly squared the ball instead of shooting himself, allowing substitute Kyvon Leidsman to tap into an empty net and seal a 3-1 victory.
The result gives FK Liepāja their first derby victory over Grobiņa this season and moves them above BFC Daugavpils into fourth place in the Virslīga standings. Grobiņa remain eighth.
Liepāja return to action on Tuesday with an away trip to FK Auda, while Grobiņa will host BFC Daugavpils next Saturday.
