BFC Daugavpils booked their place in the Latvian Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2016 after defeating Ogre United 3-1 at home on Friday evening, with goalkeeper Jānis Beks producing a crucial penalty save late in the match.
The visitors struck first in the 14th minute when Markuss Kalniņš reacted quickest following a corner to give Ogre United an early lead.
Daugavpils gradually took control and found the equaliser six minutes before half-time. Joel Yakubu beat his marker down the flank before cutting the ball back for Abdoul Kader Traoré, who finished from close range to make it 1-1.
The hosts completed the turnaround shortly after the restart as Doukumo Ayebadiepreye scored his second goal for Daugavpils’ first team to put the Virslīga side ahead.
Ogre United were handed a golden opportunity to level the match with around ten minutes remaining when Kalniņš was brought down inside the penalty area. However, Jānis Beks came to Daugavpils’ rescue, diving the right way to deny Arsentiy Doroshenko from the penalty spot.
The result was sealed in the 89th minute when Daniel Kivinda finished off a swift counter-attack to make it 3-1 and send Daugavpils into their first Latvian Cup semi-final in nine years.
The remaining quarter-final ties will be played over the next two days. Riga FC host FK Metta on Sunday, while SK Super Nova face RFS. The final semi-final place will be decided on Monday when defending champions FK Auda welcome FK Grobiņa.
