Grobiņa avoided extra time as summer signing Milan Corryn struck late to secure a 1-0 win at Mārupe and book a place in the Latvian Cup quarter-finals.

The Virsliga side dominated for long spells on an artificial surface but were repeatedly denied by Mārupe goalkeeper Kristaps Bareika, who produced a series of saves to keep the second-tier hosts level. At the other end, Grobiņa’s former Latvia international goalkeeper Roberts Ozols had little to do.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 85th minute when Belgian midfielder Corryn, who has only recently made his debut for Grobiņa, found the net to settle a tight tie.

Mārupe, who have been competing in the second tier for several seasons, had needed extra time to get past third-tier Aliance in the previous round, coming from behind late in normal time before winning 4-2 after 120 minutes.
