Estonia international Michael Schjønning-Larsen endured a frustrating start to the new Scottish Premiership season on Sunday, scoring an own goal as Kilmarnock suffered a dramatic 3-4 defeat to St. Johnstone. Estonian players were also in action in Sweden and Slovakia.
The 25-year-old left-back, who joined Kilmarnock earlier this year, was named in the starting lineup for the league opener and played the full 90 minutes. After a balanced first half ended 1-1, the match exploded after the break, with five goals scored in a frantic 20-minute spell.
Kilmarnock looked on course for victory after turning the game around to lead 3-2. However, the momentum shifted in the 69th minute when a St. Johnstone set-piece deflected off Schjønning-Larsen and into his own net, bringing the score level at 3-3.
The visitors completed the comeback ten minutes from time through Kai Fotheringham, condemning Kilmarnock to a 4-3 defeat in their opening league fixture.
Schjønning-Larsen completed the full match, with Kilmarnock now preparing to host Scottish champions Celtic next Sunday.
In the Swedish Allsvenskan, Estonia international goalkeeper Matvei Igonen and Degerfors continued their difficult run, falling to a 0-2 away defeat against IFK Göteborg, who recently eliminated Levadia from the UEFA Conference League.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper made four saves from six shots on target, but Degerfors’ attacking struggles continued. The club has now gone 477 minutes without scoring, failing to find the net in each of their last five league matches. Their last victory came on 23 April, extending their winless streak to 11 matches.
Degerfors remain 15th in the 16-team table with 10 points from 15 matches and will travel to face Malmö FF next weekend.
Meanwhile, in the Slovak Super Liga, Nikita Mihhailov remained an unused substitute as Michalovce suffered a narrow 0-1 home defeat to Žilina.
The 24-year-old midfielder had played the full 90 minutes in last weekend’s season opener but did not feature this time. Michalovce will return to action next Saturday at home against Komarno.
