Lithuanian striker Edgaras Dubickas came within moments of a dream debut for South Korean second-tier side Suwon Bluewings, only to see his stoppage-time winner ruled out by VAR as the league leaders were held to a 2-2 draw away to Cheongju.
The 28-year-old forward, who was unveiled by Suwon only last week after spending more than a decade in Italian football, was included in the matchday squad for the first time and started on the bench.
Suwon found themselves in trouble early in the second half, falling 0-2 behind by the 52nd minute. They pulled one goal back in the 77th minute, while Dubickas made his debut three minutes later.
The visitors continued to push for an equaliser and were rewarded in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Brazilian forward Reis scored his second goal of the match to make it 2-2.
There was even more drama five minutes later. Following a cross to the far post, Dubickas won an aerial duel and headed the ball into the net, sparking celebrations with the travelling Suwon supporters after what appeared to be a dramatic late winner.
However, the celebrations were short-lived. After a VAR review, the referee ruled that Dubickas had committed a foul on his marker before scoring and disallowed the goal, prompting furious protests from the Suwon players and coaching staff. The final whistle followed shortly afterwards, with the match ending 2-2.
Dubickas will now have to wait a little longer for his first goal in South Korean football. His next opportunity will come on Friday, when Suwon Bluewings host Gimhae.
Despite dropping two points, Suwon remain top of the K League 2 table with 37 points from 19 matches. However, second-placed Busan, who trail by a single point and have a game in hand, could move into first place with a victory in their next fixture.
