Servette began the new Swiss Super League season with a 0-1 home defeat to reigning champions Basel, but new signing Edvinas Gertmonas was unavailable after suffering an injury during pre-season.
The Geneva-based club announced earlier this week that the Lithuania international goalkeeper picked up an injury in Servette’s final pre-season friendly, ruling him out for at least two weeks. As a result, Gertmonas is now expected to make his competitive debut for the club sometime in August.
Servette were also without their other top goalkeeper Jeremy Frick, who is sidelined with a longer-term injury, meaning third-choice goalkeeper Leo Besson was handed the start against Basel.
The visitors scored the only goal of the match in the 78th minute when Slovenian forward Žan Celar calmly converted a penalty to secure all three points for the defending champions.
Servette will look to bounce back next Saturday when they travel to face Zürich, with Gertmonas continuing his recovery in the hope of making his debut in the coming weeks.
