Žalgiris Vilnius face an uphill battle to keep their European campaign alive after suffering a heavy 0-3 defeat away to Georgian giants Dinamo Tbilisi in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League second qualifying round tie. A series of costly defensive mistakes proved decisive as the Lithuanian side conceded three first-half goals, leaving them with a major task to overturn the deficit in next week’s return leg in Vilnius.
The hosts made an aggressive start and nearly took the lead after just five minutes when Nikoloz Ninua unleashed a powerful long-range strike that crashed against the crossbar.
Dinamo continued to dominate the opening stages and created another dangerous opportunity in the 11th minute. Georgian superstars Khvicha Kvaratskhelia talented younger brother Tornike Kvaratskhelia produced a brilliant run before finding Paris Psaltis inside the penalty area, but the visiting goalkeeper reacted well to deny the Cypriot defender.
The breakthrough arrived three minutes later. Following a well-worked attacking move, Numan Kurdic rose highest to head the ball into the net and hand Dinamo a deserved lead.
Žalgiris struggled to respond and were fortunate not to concede again in the 22nd minute when goalkeeper Carlos Olses produced a strong save to keep out Leo Santos’ effort at the near post.
The Brazilian forward would not be denied for long. In the 26th minute, Dominik Franke attempted to clear the danger inside the penalty area, but Santos stuck out a foot to divert the ball beyond the helpless goalkeeper and double Dinamo’s advantage.
Things went from bad to worse for the Lithuanian champions just four minutes later. Another defensive lapse allowed Nikoloz Ugrekhelidze to react first to a loose ball inside the box, calmly finishing to make it 3-0 before half-time.
Žalgiris struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities throughout the opening period, with their best counter-attacking move breaking down because of an inaccurate final pass. By the interval, Dinamo had registered 10 shots, six of them on target, underlining their dominance.
The visitors showed greater intent after the break but struggled to seriously trouble the Georgian defence. Danny Koy Lupano fired wide from long range shortly after the restart, while Yury Kendysh and Deividas Šešplaukis also failed to hit the target with efforts from promising positions.
Dominik Franke looked to create opportunities with deliveries into the penalty area, but Dinamo’s defence dealt comfortably with the danger, and several Žalgiris attacks broke down due to inaccurate final passes. Bryan Teixeira came closest to reducing the deficit in the closing stages, but his effort was well blocked by a defender.
The heavy defeat leaves Žalgiris with a mountain to climb in the return leg, where they will need an extraordinary comeback on home soil to keep their hopes of reaching the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round alive.
