Latvian vice-champions RFS took a major step towards the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League after securing a convincing 4-1 home victory over Icelandic cup holders Vestri.
Jānis Ikaunieks played a central role in the win, scoring once and providing two assists as RFS built a three-goal lead before half-time and quickly restored that advantage after the visitors briefly threatened a comeback.
RFS began to take control midway through the opening half. Their first clear opportunity arrived in the 16th minute when Žiga Lipušček headed Lasha Odisharia’s corner narrowly over the crossbar. Barely a minute later, Odisharia created another opening with an excellent dribble and cross, but Aleksandar Filipovic’s header struck the frame of the goal.
The pressure finally produced the opening goal in the 18th minute. Odisharia found Stefan Panic inside the penalty area and the midfielder turned before finishing with his weaker foot to put RFS ahead.
The hosts doubled their advantage five minutes later. Strahinja Rakic delivered a precise cross into the penalty area and Ikaunieks rose to power a header beyond the Vestri goalkeeper.
RFS continued to dominate and added a third shortly before half-time. Dmitrijs Zelenkovs tested goalkeeper Marvin Steinarsson from outside the penalty area and, although the initial effort was saved, Rostand Ndjiki reacted quickest to convert the rebound and score his first goal of the season for the club.
Vestri emerged with greater intent after the restart and enjoyed their best spell of the match. Their pressure was rewarded in the 63rd minute when RFS failed to clear a dangerous sequence inside their own penalty area, allowing Chriss-Albin Morfelt to head home and reduce the deficit to 3-1.
Any hope of an Icelandic comeback was quickly extinguished. Just three minutes later, Ikaunieks delivered a cross into the box and Darko Lemajič, left completely unmarked in front of goal, headed beyond the goalkeeper to restore RFS’s three-goal advantage.
RFS had several opportunities to increase the margin during the closing stages. Ikaunieks remained heavily involved and went close on more than one occasion, including a golden chance in the 85th minute when Mamadou Sylla picked him out around the penalty spot, but the Latvian international was unable to add his second goal of the evening.
RFS will now travel to Iceland for the return leg holding a commanding three-goal advantage and in a strong position to secure their place in the next round.
