Panevežys were denied a valuable home victory in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League second qualifying round tie after conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Kazakhstan’s Tobol.
The Lithuanian side took the lead through Seydina Keita in first-half stoppage time and were kept ahead for much of the second half by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Vytautas Černiauskas, who made several excellent saves and stopped a penalty. However, Nemanja Čavnic struck six minutes from time to leave the tie level ahead of the return match in Kazakhstan.
Tobol began the match as the more dangerous side and came close to opening the scoring inside the opening three minutes, narrowly missing the target. The visitors continued to create the better opportunities during the early stages, although they repeatedly failed to produce a decisive finish in the final third.
Panevežys struggled to reach the opposition penalty area but gradually began to offer more of a threat. Their first effort on target arrived in the 28th minute, while a dangerous cross seven minutes later forced the Tobol goalkeeper to intervene.
The visitors were forced into a change shortly before half-time after their starting goalkeeper was injured following a collision. His replacement was immediately called into action, producing a save to deny Isaac Asante and sending the ball behind for a corner.
That corner led to the opening goal in first-half stoppage time. A scramble developed inside the Tobol penalty area and Keita reacted quickest, forcing the ball into the net from close range to give Panevėžys a 1-0 lead.
Tobol immediately increased the pressure after the restart and should have equalised in the 47th minute, but their forward slipped at the decisive moment. Substitute Amine Talal was then left completely unmarked around the penalty spot, only for Černiauskas to produce an acrobatic save.
The Panevežys goalkeeper delivered an even more important intervention on the hour mark. After the hosts conceded a penalty, experienced Tobol captain Askhat Tagybergen stepped forward from 11 metres, but Černiauskas read the attempt and made an impressive save to preserve his side’s advantage.
Černiauskas continued to frustrate the visitors, making two more important stops in quick succession before producing another excellent save in the 81st minute. Panevežys made a triple attacking substitution as they attempted to relieve the pressure, but Tobol remained the more active side.
The visitors finally found their equaliser in the 84th minute. Following a set-piece, Čavnic was left completely unmarked and directed his finish beyond the helpless Černiauskas to make it 1-1.
Panevežys had a rare opportunity to restore their lead four minutes later, but an effort from a promising position flew over the crossbar. Tobol also threatened in the closing stages, with Černiauskas reacting well to prevent a dangerous cross from reaching an attacker in front of goal.
The draw leaves everything open ahead of the return leg in Kazakhstan, although Panevežys will need to win away from home to secure their place in the third qualifying round.
