Nõmme Kalju became the fourth Estonian club to reach the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League after scoring a dramatic late equaliser in Northern Ireland to draw 2-2 with Linfield and secure a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Kalju travelled to Windsor Park with a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Pärnu, but Linfield quickly wiped out that deficit. The hosts began aggressively and took the lead in the 11th minute when Ethan McGee rose highest from a corner and headed past Henri Perk, levelling the tie on aggregate.
The Estonian side were handed a major opportunity midway through the first half. After a chaotic goalmouth scramble, the goalscorer McGee deliberately handled the ball on the line to prevent a certain goal and was shown a red card. Oleksandr Musolitin stepped up from the resulting penalty, but his initial effort was saved by Chris Johns. Musolitin reacted quickest to the rebound, however, and fired the loose ball into the net to make it 1-1 on the night and restore Kalju’s aggregate advantage.
Despite playing with ten men, Linfield remained dangerous through crosses and set pieces, while Kalju struggled to fully impose themselves on the contest. The opening half remained physical and evenly balanced, with neither side able to take complete control before the interval.
Linfield regained the lead shortly after the restart. A long throw caused confusion inside the Kalju penalty area, and Kieran Offord, who had only just entered the match as a substitute, reacted fastest to score from close range. The goal made it 2-1 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate, leaving the tie finely poised with more than 40 minutes still to play.
Kalju created several opportunities in response, with Musolitin and Bogdan Vaštšuk both testing Johns from distance. Vaštšuk came particularly close with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, but the Linfield goalkeeper produced an excellent save to keep the hosts ahead.
Although Kalju had a numerical advantage for more than an hour, they found it difficult to consistently control the match. Linfield continued to threaten from long throws and crosses, while Perk was forced into an important save in the 90th minute to prevent the home side from scoring a third.
That intervention proved decisive. Deep into stoppage time, Kalju kept the ball alive following a corner and the loose ball eventually fell to Roko Vukušic, who laid it off for substitute Mihhail Orlov. The 22-year-old forward produced a superb finish into the top corner, silencing Windsor Park and putting Kalju 3-2 ahead on aggregate.
There was barely time for Linfield to respond before the final whistle confirmed Kalju’s passage into the next round. The 2-2 draw completed a memorable evening for Estonian club football, with Paide, Levadia and Kalju all progressing from their respective ties, while Flora will also continue in the Conference League after dropping out of the Champions League.
Kalju will face former Irish champions Shelbourne in the second qualifying round.
