RFS salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw against FK Auda in the headline fixture of the 22nd round of the Tonybet Virslīga, with VAR playing a decisive role in denying the visitors a two-goal advantage.
The first half produced very little attacking quality from the defending champions. While Auda looked the more dangerous side, RFS failed to register a single shot, with goalkeeper Nils Toms Puriņš enjoying a quiet opening 45 minutes. At the other end, Eduards Dašķevičs was Auda’s main attacking threat and forced Jevgeņijs Nerugals into the only save of the half.
RFS improved slightly after the break but still struggled to create chances. Jānis Ikaunieks, making his first start since returning from injury, was clearly short of full match fitness and was replaced early in the second half by Mārtiņš Ķigurs after an uncharacteristically quiet display.
However, the substitution backfired almost immediately. Shortly after coming on, Ķigurs attempted a risky pass across his own defensive third, which was intercepted by Oskars Rubenis. The Latvian winger quickly drove forward before firing a powerful shot beyond Nerugals to give Auda a deserved 1-0 lead.
RFS did not register their first attempt until the 69th minute, when Modou Saidy’s ambitious long-range effort sailed well over the crossbar.
The defining moment of the match arrived four minutes later in a remarkable VAR sequence. Gauthier Mankenda went down inside the Auda penalty area, but play was waved on and the visitors immediately launched a counterattack. Kader Kone finished clinically to seemingly double Auda’s advantage and make it 2-0.
Instead, VAR intervened. Referee was called to the pitchside monitor to review the earlier challenge on Mankenda and ruled that sufficient contact had been made to award a penalty. Kone’s goal was disallowed, and RFS were handed a lifeline.
Stefan Panic stepped up from the spot, but Puriņš saved the penalty. However, the ball rebounded off the post, struck the unfortunate goalkeeper on the back of the head and bounced into the net. In the space of a few moments, Auda’s apparent 2-0 lead had turned into a 1-1 draw.
Auda thought they had found another winner almost immediately when Kone raced through on goal and finished confidently, but this time the assistant referee’s flag denied the visitors, with the striker adjudged to have been offside.
Neither side created another clear opportunity in the closing stages as the points were shared.
Despite producing one of their least convincing attacking displays of the season, RFS escaped with a valuable point. The champions finished the match without a single shot on target from open play and managed only two attempts in total, yet still found the net through Panic’s fortunate penalty rebound.
The draw lifts RFS back to the top of the Virslīga table, although they now lead Riga FC only on goal difference. Auda remain comfortably in third place, 15 points behind the leading pair but still 12 points clear of fourth-placed Liepāja.
