In the final match of the Tonybet Virslīga Round 21, SK Super Nova came from behind to defeat FK Tukums 2000 2-1 away from home, ending a six-match winless run and climbing into sixth place in the league standings.
Tukums made the brighter start despite seeing less of the ball. The hosts looked more threatening throughout the opening half, registering seven attempts, three of them on target, while Super Nova enjoyed more possession without creating many clear opportunities.
The pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute. Maksym Derkach drove forward from the left flank before unleashing a powerful strike under the crossbar to give Tukums a deserved 1-0 lead.
However, Tukums handed Super Nova an equaliser just before half-time. Defender Martins Štāls brought down Valerijs Lizunovs inside the penalty area, leaving the referee with no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Lizunovs stepped up himself and confidently converted the penalty in first-half stoppage time to send the teams into the break level at 1-1.
Super Nova completed the turnaround almost immediately after the restart. Just three minutes into the second half, Milans Tihonovičs delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, where a scramble followed in front of goal. After several blocked attempts, Kristers Skadmanis reacted quickest and, with the help of a deflection off a Tukums defender, bundled the ball over the line to make it 2-1.
The remainder of the match belonged largely to the home side as Tukums pushed hard for an equaliser. The hosts repeatedly threatened from set-pieces and long-range efforts, earning six second-half corners and forcing goalkeeper Dāvis Veisbuks into several important saves. His finest moment came in the 53rd minute when he first denied Leoni from distance before producing an excellent stop to keep out Rūdolfs Meļķis curling effort towards the top corner just seconds later.
Despite sustained pressure during the closing stages, Tukums were unable to find a breakthrough, while Super Nova defended resolutely to secure all three points.
The victory ends Super Nova’s six-match wait for a league win. The Rīga side move up to sixth place in the Virslīga standings, overtaking BFC Daugavpils, and will have the opportunity to break into the top five when they face bottom side Ogre United on 6 July.
