Tonybet Virslīga Round 21 continued in Jelgava, where the home side extended their impressive run of form with a comfortable 2-0 victory over FK Grobiņa. Rihards Bečers struck once in each half as FS Jelgava claimed a third consecutive league win, while Grobiņa suffered their 10th defeat of the season.

Grobiņa made the brighter start and nearly took the lead inside the opening minutes. Dodo met Artem Kholod’s cross with a header, but the Brazilian’s effort drifted narrowly wide of the far post.

After that early warning, Jelgava gradually took control of proceedings and began to dictate the tempo. Their first big chance arrived in the 15th minute when Roberts Meļķis unleashed a powerful long-range strike that crashed against the crossbar. Moments later Grobiņa threatened on the counterattack, with Ali Aruna firing just over after good work from summer signing Milan Corryn.

As the first half progressed, Jelgava continued to increase the pressure. A series of corners forced Grobiņa deep into their own penalty area, and Dodo was required to clear one dangerous effort off the goal line after a well-worked set-piece.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 45th minute. Gļebs Patika found Rihards Bečers inside the penalty area, and the striker controlled the ball before smashing an unstoppable finish into the top corner to hand Jelgava a deserved 1-0 lead at the interval.

Grobiņa attempted to respond after the break by introducing Devids Dobrecovs and Jānis Krautmanis, but Jelgava remained the more dangerous side. Around the hour mark the hosts created three consecutive opportunities in the same attack, with Martin Hašek, David Holoubek and Gļebs Žaleiko all being denied before the danger was finally cleared. Moments later Žaleiko went close himself, narrowly missing the target from outside the penalty area.

The visitors struggled to trouble Adam Dvorak for much of the second half. Their first shot on target arrived only in the 76th minute when Dobrecovs tested the Jelgava goalkeeper from distance, but Dvorak was equal to the effort.

Jelgava wrapped up all three points six minutes from time. Once again Žaleiko was the creator, delivering a dangerous cross into the box that Bečers converted with a composed first-time finish into the bottom corner to complete his brace and secure a 2-0 victory.

The home side could have added a third moments earlier when Filip Hasek forced Ozols into a fine save, while Grobiņa’s best late opportunity came from substitute Gļebs Kļuskins, whose header from Milan Corryn’s corner flew over the crossbar.

The victory was Jelgava’s third straight league win. The run lifts them into fifth place in the standings, level on points with fourth-placed FK Liepāja but behind on goal difference.

Grobiņa remain ninth with 17 points after 21 matches. They are still seven points clear of bottom-placed Ogre United.
