Tonybet Virslīga round 20 finally produced the goals that had been missing in the day’s opening two goalless draws, as FS Jelgava followed up last week’s emphatic victory with another dominant display, cruising to a convincing 5-1 win over SK Super Nova.
Jelgava arrived in confident mood after recording their biggest victory of the season in the previous round, defeating FK Tukums 2000 4-1, and they wasted little time carrying that momentum into this encounter. The visitors thought they had taken the lead inside the opening ten minutes when the ball found the back of the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 21st minute. Following a swift counter-attack, the ball reached Rihards Bečers, whose initial effort was well saved by Dāvis Viljams Veisbuks. However, the rebound fell kindly back to the Jelgava forward, who made no mistake with his second attempt to score his first Virslīga goal of the season and put his side 1-0 ahead.
The goals kept coming. Just a few minutes later, Gļebs Patika was brought down inside the penalty area and Gļebs Žaleiko confidently converted the resulting spot-kick to double Jelgava’s advantage.
Super Nova’s nightmare spell continued only three minutes later. Jelgava regained possession near the corner flag and Roberts Meļķis spotted the goalkeeper off his line before curling a magnificent strike from a tight angle into the far top corner to make it 3-0.
The hosts managed to pull one back before the interval after winning possession high up the pitch. Eduards Emsis delivered an excellent through ball for Valerijs Lizunovs, who calmly finished past Adam Dvorak to reduce the deficit to 3-1 and give Super Nova a glimmer of hope heading into the break.
That hope nearly grew early in the second half after an extraordinary mistake from Jelgava goalkeeper Adam Dvorak. Attempting an audacious backheel pass outside his own penalty area, the Czech completely misjudged the execution, gifting possession to Super Nova. The ball quickly reached Eduards Emsis, who had an empty net to aim at, but a desperate recovery challenge from a Jelgava defender blocked his effort before it could cross the line.
Instead of setting up a tense finish, Jelgava regained complete control during the final stages. A rapid counter-attack saw David Holoubek release Miloš Pudil down the left, and the Czech defender fired a powerful left-footed strike into the far corner to restore the three-goal advantage.
The scoring was completed shortly afterwards following excellent combination play between Gļebs Žaleiko and Roberts Meļķis. Žaleiko found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper before calmly finishing to score his second goal of the afternoon and his second league goal of the season, sealing an emphatic 5-1 victory.
Jelgava’s second convincing win in succession lifts them above Super Nova into sixth place in the Tonybet Virslīga standings on 22 points, leaving them just three points behind fourth-placed FK Liepāja.
Super Nova, meanwhile, are now without a victory in their last five league matches, having suffered four defeats and one draw during that run. They will attempt to end that disappointing streak on 1 July when they travel to face FK Tukums 2000.
