Toplyga Matchday 16 produced change at the top of the table as Džiugas Telšiai moved into first place for the first time this season after a dominant 4-0 victory over FK Panevėžys. The result allowed the Telšiai side to overtake Kauno Žalgiris, who had held top spot continuously since Matchday 2. Džiugas now sit on 30 points, at least temporarily leading the Lithuanian championship standings.
The home side started aggressively and opened the scoring already in the fifth minute. Following a set-piece situation Ronald Sobowale knocked the ball down for Lukas Ankudinovas, whose header was finished from close range by Valentino Vermeulen to give Džiugas an early advantage.
Panevėžys struggled to respond and the hosts continued creating the more dangerous moments. Salomon Kouadio had a chance midway through the half after being found by Kwadwo Asamoah, though his effort flew comfortably over the crossbar.
Džiugas doubled their lead in the middle of the first half after another strong attacking move. Denis Ževžikovas played the ball into Ronald Sobowale, who produced an excellent first touch before calmly finishing to make it 2-0.
Panevežys nearly found a route back into the match before halftime when Joel Bopesu struck the woodwork directly from a free-kick, but it proved to be one of very few dangerous moments for the visitors.
The match effectively ended shortly after the hour mark when Justinas Januševskis committed a foul inside the penalty area, receiving a red card in the process. Argentinian Iker Scotto who scored last week for Džiugas, stepped up from the penalty spot and converted confidently to extend the lead to three goals.
Džiugas added a fourth in the 79th minute after another penalty was awarded, this time for a foul by Strahinja Kerkez on Valentino Vermeulen inside the box. Vilius Piliukaitis took responsibility and also converted successfully to complete the rout.
The heavy defeat leaves FK Panevėžys in sixth place with 21 points after 16 rounds, while Džiugas continue what is becoming one of the biggest surprise campaigns in Lithuanian football this season.
