Latvian coach Jurģis Kalns, who has been a free agent since October last year following the end of his spell with FK Auda, has recently been linked with several Lithuanian clubs, according to Baltic Football News sources.
According to our sources, the 43-year-old specialist was approached and received an official offer from FK Panevežys, but ultimately decided to turn it down. The Lithuanian side were searching for a new head coach after Roland Vrabec left his position during the international break. The role has since been filled by Finnish coach Toni Korkeakunnas, who won the Finnish championship with HJK in 2023.
Kalns was also among the candidates considered by FK Žalgiris Vilnius following the dismissal of Rolandas Džiaukštas last week. The decision came after a disappointing goalless draw against bottom-placed Riteriai, leaving Žalgiris third in the standings after eight rounds, already trailing leaders and fierce rivals FK Kauno Žalgiris by 11 points.
However, Lithuanian media reported yesterday that Žalgiris were set to appoint Lithuania U21 head coach and former Hegelmann manager Andrius Skerla, and the move was made official today.
Kalns remains without a club for now, having previously worked in Latvia with FK Auda, SK Super Nova, FK Tukums 2000 and Valmiera FC, as well as abroad in Cambodia with Visakha.
