In a tense Tonybet Virslīga Round 5 clash, FC RFS secured a narrow 1-0 away win over FS Jelgava, with a single first-half penalty proving enough to separate the sides.
Both teams came into the match looking to respond after setbacks – Jelgava following their record 0-8 defeat to Riga FC, and RFS after suffering their first loss of the season against FK Auda. RFS started the stronger side and took control early, creating pressure that paid off in the 28th minute when Alans Kangars handled the ball inside the box. Stefan Panic stepped up and calmly converted the penalty into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead.
RFS continued to dominate much of the first half, creating several chances, but Jelgava goalkeeper Adam Dvorák kept his side in the game with multiple saves, denying both Jānis Ikaunieks and Darko Lemajic. Jelgava struggled to create clear opportunities, relying mostly on set pieces and isolated attacks.
The second half became more physical and fragmented, with Jelgava showing more aggression and pushing higher up the pitch. Their best chance came through Rihards Bečers, whose header was well saved by Jevgēņijs Nerugals.
RFS had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 65th minute after another handball in the box, this time by Jegors Novikovs. However, Jānis Ikaunieks saw his penalty saved by Dvorak, keeping Jelgava in contention.
In the closing stages, Jelgava applied pressure with a series of corners and attacking spells, but RFS defended solidly and saw out the win without allowing any major chances. The visitors also had moments on the counter but failed to add a second goal.
There was concern for RFS as Lasha Odisharia was forced off in the second half with a hamstring injury. The Georgian winger had already missed significant time last season with a similar issue, raising questions about another potential spell on the sidelines.
With the win, RFS move level on points with league leaders FK Auda, who also won their match, tightening the race at the top of the table.
