In the opening match of the Tonybet Virslīga fifth round, BFC Daugavpils used a strong first-half performance to defeat Ogre United 2-1 at home, holding off late pressure to secure their second consecutive win of the season.

Coming into the match, Daugavpils were full of confidence after claiming their first victory just four days earlier with a 2-0 win over FK Liepāja. Meanwhile, Ogre United were still searching for their first win of the campaign.

The visitors actually created the first danger of the match, as Ukrainian defender Vadym Mashchenko tested goalkeeper Jānis Beks with a dangerous free kick. However, as the game settled, momentum shifted towards the hosts.

Goalkeeper Ņikita Parfjonovs was called into action twice early on, keeping Ogre in the game, but in the 23rd minute he was finally beaten. Rostand Ndjiki delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Artem Garzha controlled the ball on his chest and fired a first-time finish into the right corner, scoring his third goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Daugavpils continued to push forward and nearly doubled their lead through Ndjiki, but Parfjonovs stood firm. Ogre responded late in the first half with their best chance, as Emīls Evelons redirected a cross goalwards, only to see his effort strike the post.

The hosts capitalised before halftime. Gļebs Mihaļcovs produced an excellent cross from the right, and Ndjiki capped off his impressive start at the club by scoring his second goal in as many matches, making it 2-0. The loanee from RFS has now recorded two goals and two assists in his first two appearances.

Ogre head coach Aleksandr Rekhviashvili reacted at halftime with a double substitution, introducing Ukrainian twins Matvii and Timofiy Marusii. While the changes did not immediately shift the balance, Ogre did find a way back into the game.

Kristers Čudars was brought down inside the penalty area, and the captain calmly converted the resulting spot kick to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Daugavpils responded with renewed attacking intent, with Ndjiki again at the centre of the action, but Parfjonovs made key saves to keep Ogre’s hopes alive. As heavy rain began to fall late in the match, the visitors grew stronger and pushed for an equaliser.

Both Evelons and substitute Kabagamba Johnson found shooting opportunities, but Beks remained solid, while another effort flew over the bar.

The best chance came in the 90th minute, when Haralds Silagailis found himself in a promising position inside the box, but his close-range header went just wide.

Daugavpils held on through the final moments to secure all three points and extend their winning run.

They will next travel to face FK Auda on Sunday, while Ogre United will look to finally claim their first victory of the season when they host FK Grobiņa on Monday.
