Another dramatic Virslīga ending happened today as FK Liepāja snatched a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Ogre United, with Djibril Gueye scoring in the sixth minute of stoppage time to hand the visitors all three points and inflict a painful defeat on the Virslīga newcomers.
For Liepāja, this was their first match away from home this season after opening with two tough fixtures against last year’s top two sides. Meanwhile, Ogre United came into the game with confidence after securing their first-ever Virslīga point against FK Tukums 2000 in the previous round.
There was also a notable storyline in the home side’s lineup, as 18-year-old goalkeeper Jānis Biščuhis made his debut, replacing Ņikita Parfjonovs, who is on loan from Liepāja and therefore ineligible to face his parent club.
The first half was competitive but goalless, with Liepāja creating the more dangerous chances. Fellipe Vieira and Kyvon Leidsman both came close, while Biščuhis showed composure beyond his years, making a number of solid saves to keep the hosts level at the break.
The second half brought even more drama. Liepāja had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 59th minute after being awarded a penalty, but Leidsman failed to convert, missing the target and keeping Ogre firmly in the contest.
As the game wore on, the visitors continued to apply pressure, while Ogre looked dangerous on the counterattack. The young goalkeeper Biščuhis remained one of the standout performers, denying Amadou Traoré and others as Liepāja pushed forward.
The match seemed destined to end in a draw, but the closing moments turned chaotic. In stoppage time, a heavy collision between Dāvis Vejkrigers and Djibril Gueye left both players requiring treatment for head injuries. After receiving bandages, both returned to the pitch – a moment that would prove decisive.
Deep into added time, Liepāja finally found the breakthrough. Abiodun Ogunniyi produced a brilliant piece of play to set up Gueye, who, despite his bandaged head, kept his composure and fired home from close range to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory.
It was Liepāja second win of the season, while Ogre United are still with one point after three games.
