Latvia international Alvis Jaunzems has undergone surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of the season, his club Lechia Gdańsk has confirmed.
The 26-year-old defender has not featured regularly in recent months, with his last appearance coming on September 21, when he played just three minutes. His last full match dates back to the end of August, before ongoing injury problems forced him out of action.
Since then, Jaunzems has been dealing with persistent Achilles tendon issues. The player had initially hoped to avoid surgery and return to the pitch before the end of the season, but those plans have now changed after undergoing a procedure earlier this week.
Jaunzems joined Lechia last summer following two seasons with fellow Polish club Stal Mielec, making the move to Gdańsk. In the current Ekstraklasa campaign, he featured in nine matches, registering one assist. Jaunzems also has made 46 appearances for the Latvian national team.
