Riga FC will look for an immediate response to their opening-round defeat when the reigning champions host Daugavpils in Saturday’s second Virslīga fixture.
Adrián Guľa’s side began the new campaign with a 1-2 loss away to Liepāja with Paulo Eduardo coming off the bench to score their only goal. The champions allowed two penalty kicks one at the start of the game and the other right at the end of the match.
Since the defeat the champions have announced two additions – from Brazilian club Juventud signing center-back Abner and attacking player Juan Christian. As of right now both are not shown in the Latvian Football Federation page as registered, but it might change in the upcoming hours and might be available to make their debut today.
Daugavpils are also chasing their first points of the season after a 0-1 home defeat by Grobiņa. Last season the Latgale club proved awkward opponents for Riga, winning the first meeting between the teams and also taking a draw in the third-round encounter.
Earlier on Saturday, Grobiņa face Auda at the Daugava Stadium reserve pitch in Liepāja. Both sides opened the season with victories and have three points on the board.
Grobiņa won 1-0 away to Daugavpils thanks to Dāvids Družiņins’ goal, while Auda beat Super Nova 2-1 through strikes from Josue Vergara and Hussaini Ibrahim. Auda had the better of this fixture last season, winning four of the five meetings in all competitions, including a Latvian Cup last-16 tie.
Saturday’s match between Grobiņa and Auda kicks off at 14:00, with Riga against Daugavpils starting at 16:00 in Mežaparks Sports Village.
