Grobiņa began their 2026 Tonybet Virslīga campaign with a 1-0 victory at Daugavpils, sealing a first top-flight win in the city after four previous defeats there.

Daugavpils saw more of the ball in the first half and tried to set the tempo, but sloppy possession repeatedly broke down their attacks and invited Grobiņa to counter. Oļģerts Raščevskis and Artjoms Puzirevskis were unable to make those transitions count before the break.

The decisive moment arrived early in the second half from a set piece. Former Lithuania international Rolandas Baravykas delivered the cross and centre-back captain Dāvids Družiņins powered in a 51st-minute header. It was only the second Virslīga goal of Družiņins’ career and, as with his first, it came in a 1-0 win against Daugavpils.

Daugavpils pushed late on and introduced 21-year-old defender Rinalds Aizups in the closing stages, marking his first official appearance in around 18 months after a long recovery from a serious car crash in September 2024, which put his football career in serious doubt. The hosts, however, could not find an equaliser.

The result was Grobiņa’s only fifth away win in the Virslīga, adding to earlier victories on the road against Tukums 2000, Auda, Jelgava and Metta.

Grobiņa host Latvian Cup holders Auda next weekend, while Daugavpils travel to face the champions Riga FC.
