In a kind of RFS derby, RFS Women recorded a 2-1 win over Rīgas futbola skola in the third round of the Women’s Winter Cup, but were made to work hard after a late response from their opponents. The two clubs, of course, share similarities in the name with RFS having, at one point in their existence, also being known as Rīgas futbola skola, despite the original one being a significantly older institution, dating back to 1960s.

RFS dominated possession early on and looked to dictate the tempo, yet clear chances were limited in the final third. The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute when Shchur was brought down in the penalty area during a quick transition, allowing Anastasija Čemirtāne to convert confidently from the spot.

The pattern continued after the break, with RFS circulating the ball and Rīgas futbola skola waiting for openings on the counter. The second goal finally came in the 75th minute as Daibe won the ball near the edge of the box and fed Alīna Ansone, who paused before finishing to make it 2-0.

Rīgas futbola skola hit back within minutes on the break to set up a nervy finish, but RFS held on for the narrow victory.

RFS Women are next in action on Sunday in Tallinn, where they begin the new Baltic Women’s League season. Their final, decisive Winter Cup fixture is scheduled for 22 February at 20:00 at the Olympic Centre against Metta.
