What if Jason Sudeikis, the Emmy-winning star of the hit series Ted Lasso, swapped fiction for reality and took charge of a football team in Vilnius? That unlikely scenario could soon become a genuine possibility.

Lithuanian club Žalgiris Vilnius, the city’s tourism and business development agency Go Vilnius, and media company Laisvės TV have joined forces in an ambitious campaign, officially inviting Sudeikis to travel to Lithuania this autumn and become the head coach of Žalgiris Vilnius’ women’s team for one week, culminating in him leading the side in a Lithuanian Women’s A League match.

The invitation comes at a fitting time, with the globally acclaimed Apple TV series entering its fourth season, where Ted Lasso is set to coach a women’s football team for the first time. Hoping to turn fiction into reality, Vilnius is offering the actor of Lithuanian descent the chance to experience the role for real.

Sudeikis and the Ted Lasso creative team have been promised complete tactical freedom, along with the full support of Žalgiris’ professional coaching staff, ensuring that the Hollywood star’s first steps into real-life football are both authentic and enjoyable rather than overwhelming.

Should he accept the invitation, Vilnius is also prepared to showcase much more than football. With Coach Beard’s eccentric personality becoming one of the show’s defining traits, the city has promised to organise a unique programme away from the stadium as well, highlighting some of Vilnius’ most unusual attractions.

Žalgiris Vilnius president and Laisvės TV founder Andrius Tapinas said the campaign was born primarily from a desire to shine a brighter spotlight on women’s sport, while also presenting Vilnius to millions of Ted Lasso fans around the world.

“You know Ted Lasso’s famous yellow ‘Believe’ sign in the dressing room? Well, here in Vilnius, we believe in Ted 100 percent. That’s why we’re offering him and the legendary Coach Beard a real challenge – a real team, real Women’s A Lyga matches and a real opportunity. The team is ready, the stadium is ready, and Vilnius is ready to prove that football, courage and a good sense of humour know no boundaries.”

Go Vilnius Head of Communications Eglė Girdzijauskaitė added that the initiative perfectly reflects the city’s approach to promoting itself through bold and unconventional ideas.

“Vilnius has always been a city that isn’t afraid to laugh at itself and look at things from a different perspective. Millions of people around the world love Ted Lasso, and the new season’s focus on women’s football perfectly aligns with our ambition to support and grow the visibility of women’s sport. We believe this initiative can attract international media attention while encouraging fans of the series to discover Vilnius as a vibrant, welcoming and slightly unconventional city.”

According to the organisers, the invitation has already reached people close to Sudeikis, while a social media campaign has been launched to encourage both the actor and the creators of Ted Lasso to accept the challenge.
