The Lithuanian Football Federation announced changes to the national team camp ahead of the October fixtures, with FC Hegelmann goalkeeper Vincentas Šarkauskas receiving his first-ever call-up to the senior squad.
The Federation confirmed that Edgaras Utkus, a defender playing in Belgium’s top division, and Marius Adamonis, a goalkeeper from Italy’s Serie B, will both miss the upcoming international window due to injuries. While no replacement has been named for Utkus in defense, the vacant goalkeeper spot will be filled by Šarkauskas, who joins the national camp for the first time.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper is enjoying the best season of his career so far. Representing FC Hegelmann, Šarkauskas has featured in 20 league matches, keeping nine clean sheets and playing a key role in his club’s strong campaign. Despite his impressive form, this marks his first involvement with Lithuania’s senior national team – previously, he made just one appearance for the country’s U-21 side.
The Lithuanian national team, which gathered today in Kaunas for its first training session of the international break, will play two FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in October. Lithuania will first travel to Finland on October 9, before returning home to face Poland three days later at Darius and Girėnas Stadium.
