Lithuania climbed to the top of their FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying group with a confident 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Druskininkai, collecting their seventh point of the campaign.

In a contest where the visitors dominated early possession, clear chances were at a premium throughout the first half. Bosnia and Herzegovina controlled the ball but struggled to break down a well-organised Lithuanian defence, while the hosts looked most dangerous on the counter. Rimantė Jonušaitė had the best opportunities before the break but was unable to convert, as the sides went into half-time level at 0-0.

Lithuania took control after the restart and were rewarded just past the hour mark. Italian top-flight club Como’s representative Liucija Vaitukaitytė picked out Jonušaitė with a precise pass, and the forward made no mistake, guiding a composed finish past the goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Momentum firmly on their side, the hosts doubled their lead minutes later. Jonušaitė struck again, this time finishing between the goalkeeper’s legs to seal her brace and put Lithuania in a commanding position.

Bosnia and Herzegovina pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a response, but Lithuania remained disciplined at the back and saw out the result comfortably to secure an important victory.

Lithuania now prepare for a trip to Tallinn to face Estonia, with their previous meeting ending in a goalless draw.
