Estonia strengthened their position in the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday with a dominant 5-0 victory away to Liechtenstein in Vaduz, moving into second place in the group ahead of the final round of fixtures.
The visitors made a dream start, taking the lead after just six minutes. Estonia captain Vlada Kubassova capitalised on a misunderstanding between a Liechtenstein defender and goalkeeper Marcia Bischofberger before calmly rolling the ball into an empty net.
Estonia doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark when Katrin Kirpu broke through on goal and finished confidently past Bischofberger. The only setback for the visitors came shortly before half-time when Kubassova was forced off through injury.
The Estonians continued to dominate after the break. Lisette Tammik made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half with a clinical finish underneath the crossbar, before Liisa Merisalu added a fourth goal on the hour mark.
The fifth arrived seven minutes from time in unusual fashion. Anželika Jotkina’s long-range effort struck the post, bounced off the goalkeeper, hit the opposite post and eventually crossed the line. The official match report credited the goal to Jotkina.
The result leaves Estonia second in the group heading into Tuesday’s decisive final fixture. Estonia will host Bosnia and Herzegovina in Pärnu at 20:00 local time, with victory enough to secure top spot in the group. Meanwhile, Lithuania will conclude their campaign away to Liechtenstein.
