FK Grobiņa have taken another huge step toward securing their Virslīga status, edging out FK Tukums 2000 with a tense 1-0 win in round 32 of the championship.
The Kurzeme side only recently parted ways with long-time coach Viktors Dobrecovs, handing the reins to assistant Oskars Kļava. The change seems to have breathed new life into the team: after climbing off the bottom with victory against Metta, Grobiņa once more found inspiration in Ukrainian striker Mykola Agapov.
Agapov was lively from the start, rattling the crossbar with a curling effort on 14 minutes. Tukums thought they had grounds for a penalty midway through the half, but the referee waved play on, sparking protests and a yellow card for Raivis Ķiršs after a reckless tackle moments later. The opening period ended without a breakthrough.
The decisive moment came early in the second half when Maksims Sidorovs was brought down inside the box. Agapov made no mistake from the spot, coolly converting his third goal in just five outings since joining the club.
Until the penalty, Tukums had enjoyed more possession, but the goal tilted momentum. Grobiņa suddenly looked sharper, creating chances to extend their lead – most notably from a late corner where the visitors had to defend desperately.
With nine minutes of added time, Tukums pushed forward but failed to seriously threaten, and Grobiņa held firm to celebrate a priceless victory.
The result lifts Grobiņa into eighth place, now five points clear of bottom side Metta. Tukums remain above them but see their cushion reduced to just two points.
After the international break, Grobiņa will face SK Super Nova in another key clash, while Tukums host title contenders RFS.
