The 32nd round of the Latvian Virslīga kicked off with Riga FC cruising past FK Liepāja 3-0 at home, moving the capital club to the brink of the long-awaited league crown.
Liepāja have been a dream opponent for Riga this season. Four meetings, four wins: 5-2, 2-0 and 3-2 in the league, plus a 4-0 demolition in September’s Latvian Cup semi-final. In that match, Latvia international Marko Regža netted twice. This time, however, the striker began on the bench.
Riga struck early when a hopeful cross fortuitously reached Orlando Galo at the back post, the Costa Rican bundling the ball over the line. Liepāja responded with some attacking pressure before halftime, but poor execution in the final third – and sharp goalkeeping from Krišjānis Zviedris – kept them scoreless. Zviedris first denied Vjačeslavs Isajevs’ header, then stopped Djibril Gueye’s acrobatic effort straight after the restart.
Midway through the second half, Reginaldo Ramires thought he had doubled Riga’s lead on the counter, only for VAR to rule it out for offside. Moments later, Meissa Diop made sure of it anyway, hammering home a powerful strike to make it 2-0.
The finishing touch came in the 79th minute. From a set piece, Raivis Jurkovskis whipped the ball across goal for substitute Regža to tap in Riga’s third, killing off any hopes of a Liepāja comeback.
The win extends Riga’s lead over RFS to 11 points. Adrian Guľa’s side could even secure the title in the next round on October 19, away to Metta, if RFS drop points. With just four games remaining, Riga need only four more points to be crowned Latvian champions.
