Latvian champions FC RFS once again failed to take all three points in Liepāja, as a dramatic encounter saw them take the lead, go behind while playing with ten men, and then salvage a draw in the closing minutes against FK Liepāja – 2:2.
The visitors struck first midway through the opening half. Ismael Diomande was brought down inside the area by Anto Babic, and Stefan Panic stepped up to convert the penalty with authority. The Serbian midfielder has now reached eight league goals this season.
But just before the interval, RFS suffered a major setback. Barthelemy Diedhiou, already cautioned, fouled Amilcar Silva and was sent off, leaving the champions to play the rest of the match a man down.
Liepāja quickly took advantage after the restart. In the 53rd minute, Silva whipped in a dangerous cross that Djibril Gueye headed past Marko Maric at the near post — the Senegalese striker’s 16th goal of the campaign. Only six minutes later, the hosts turned the game around as Daņila Patijčuks effort deflected off Strahinja Rakić and spun into the net for 2-1.
RFS fought back despite their numerical disadvantage. After seeing one penalty claim waved away by VAR, they finally equalized in the 88th minute when Faisal Konaté set up Jānis Ikaunieks, who coolly finished from close range for his 14th goal of the league season.
The closing minutes were wide open. Liepāja nearly stole victory in stoppage time, but Marko Marić denied Dodo with a crucial save. Deep into added time, Petr Mareš forced Petković into action with a dangerous free kick, and Konaté fired wide from the rebound.
In the end, both sides had to settle for a point after a match full of twists and late drama – a result that keeps Liepāja in the bronze position and leaves RFS frustrated once again on the Baltic coast. With league leaders Riga FC now having a chance to increase the advantage to 8 points if they beat BFC Daugavpils tomorrow.
