On Tuesday evening, FCI Levadia learned the identity of their opponent in the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round – Luxembourg champions FC Differdange 03.
Differdange sealed their place with a 1-0 home victory over Welsh champions The New Saints, winning the tie 2-0 on aggregate. The only goal of the second leg came in the 68th minute when 35-year-old French veteran Samir Hadji converted from the penalty spot.
Earlier in the month, Differdange were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, losing 2-4 on aggregate to Kosovan champions Drita FC.
There’s an interesting historical twist to this tie – the only previous time Differdange have faced an Estonian side in European competition was also against Levadia. That encounter took place back in 2011, in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. The first leg in Luxembourg ended 0-0, but Differdange claimed a 1-0 win in the return leg at Lilleküla Stadium in Tallinn, knocking Levadia out of the tournament.
If the schedule remains unchanged, the first leg of this year’s clash will be played away in Luxembourg, with the return leg set for A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn. The provisional dates for the matches are August 7 and August 14.
