Linfield manager David Healy says his side is relishing the chance to bounce back from their Champions League disappointment as they prepare to face Lithuanian champions Žalgiris Vilnius in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League tonight at the LFF Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the tie, Healy acknowledged the challenge posed by Žalgiris, who knocked Linfield out of the Champions League in 2021, but stressed that his focus is on his own team’s performance. “We’ve done what we can,” said Healy. “Zalgiris are a good side, well coached, with dangerous players up front – Antal in particular has been in scoring form. But we’ve worked hard and prepared as best we can to implement our own game plan.

Linfield defender Ethan McGee echoed his manager’s determination. “It’ll be a tough game, but we’ve trained well all week and we’re ready. Everyone’s just eager to get going and hopefully push through to the next round.

Healy also highlighted the challenge of facing a side mid-season, noting Žalgiris’ domestic rhythm. Despite their current standing outside the top of the A Lyga table, he pointed out they remain reigning champions and deserve full respect.

With the first leg in Vilnius and the return leg in Belfast next week, Linfield will be hoping for a stronger result than their last visit in 2021. “Both clubs are proud champions of their countries,” Healy said. “We’re expecting a tough game — and hopefully a better outcome this time around.”
