Latvian national team player Alvis Jaunzems has officially signed with Polish Ekstraklasa club Lechia Gdańsk. The contract runs until June 30, 2027, with an option to extend for an additional season.
The 26-year-old right-back had already featured in several of Lechia Gdańsk’s pre-season friendlies, and the club confirmed the signing today. Jaunzems is no stranger to Polish top-flight football, having spent the past two seasons with Stal Mielec.
During his time at Stal Mielec, Jaunzems made 59 appearances, scoring two goals and providing two assists. Despite his consistent performances, the club was relegated after finishing 16th in the 18-team Ekstraklasa last season. Jaunzems, however, remains in the top tier by joining Lechia Gdańsk, who finished two places above Stal.
Jaunzems played a key role in Valmiera FC’s 2022 Virslīga title-winning campaign. Interestingly, his new teammates at Lechia include Ukrainian midfielder Ivan Zhelizko and Colombian right winger Camilo Mena — both of whom also won the Latvian championship in the fall of 2022.
On the international stage, Jaunzems has already earned 45 caps for Latvia.
