A Latvian football club has joined Dubai United FC in expressing interest in signing Dutch winger Quincy Promes, according to his lawyer and courtroom reports. The Latvian club, which is set to compete in European competitions, has reportedly sent a letter of intent to sign Promes if he is allowed to await his appeal in freedom.
Promes is scheduled for a pro forma hearing before the Dutch court of appeal this Tuesday. The hearing concerns his appeal against a 7.5-year prison sentence for drug importation and stabbing his cousin.
Promes’ lawyer, Cem Polat, confirmed the Latvian club’s offer remains open alongside Dubai United FC, where Promes played last season before being extradited to the Netherlands. Given Latvia’s extradition treaty with the Netherlands, a conviction on appeal would mean Promes would be sent back to serve his sentence.
Crime reporter Wesley Meijer confirmed the developments and noted that several clubs are watching closely to see if Promes will be free to move. Polat also plans to request a suspension of Promes’ detention so the player can continue his career while the appeal is processed.
De Telegraaf reports that Promes can sign a contract until the end of August, enabling him to play and earn until the case’s final decision. Polat has suggested that Promes might stay in the Netherlands or the Benelux region under certain conditions, such as surrendering his passport or monthly check-ins, but the Latvian offer stands as a viable option.
The 33-year-old has made 50 appearances for the Dutch National team scoring seven times.
