In the final match of Matchday 22 in the TonyBet Virslīga, league leaders Riga FC were held to a 1–1 draw at home by BFC Daugavpils, falling just short of setting a new all-time league record for consecutive wins in a single season.

Riga FC came into the match riding a stunning 15-match winning streak, equalling the Virslīga record shared with Skonto (1993) and Valmiera FC (2022). Interestingly, both of those historic runs also ended in dramatic fashion — Skonto’s streak ended in Daugavpils, while Valmiera fell to the now-defunct Spartaks Jūrmala.

Riga were heavy favourites to continue their streak, especially with Daugavpils showing signs of recent form dip. However, the visitors arrived with new reinforcements, including two players on loan from RFS — Modou Saidy and the standout 18-year-old Burkina Faso forward Faycal Konate. It was Konate who immediately made his mark, wreaking havoc on the Riga defence in the opening 30 minutes.

The young forward headed Daugavpils into the lead midway through the first half, catching goalkeeper Krišjānis Zviedris off guard and handing the visitors a shock advantage. Konate, who had only appeared twice for RFS this season, was a constant threat and forced Zviedris into two crucial saves to keep Riga in the match.

Despite eventually gaining control of possession, Riga FC struggled to create clear-cut chances as Daugavpils defended with discipline and courage, showing they would not hand over a record-setting win easily.

The match’s turning point came in the 63rd minute when Daugavpils were reduced to ten men. Ivorian Diakite was shown a second yellow card after catching Riga forward Marko Regža with an elbow to the face — a challenge that left both players momentarily down.

As expected, Riga FC applied relentless pressure with the numerical advantage. The equaliser finally came in the 84th minute, with Ahmed Ankrah firing home to bring the score to 1–1.

The hosts nearly completed the comeback in stoppage time — a late goal from a set piece sparked celebrations, but the assistant referee’s flag for offside silenced the Riga crowd. Just moments later, Dāvis Cucurs went down in the box, but referee Aleksandrs Golubevs waved away penalty appeals, and time ran out for the home side.

Riga’s winning streak ended at 15 — equalling the historical high but falling short of surpassing it.

Riga FC remain atop the standings with 55 points from 22 matches, but their lead is now just three points over nearest challengers RFS. Daugavpils, with 27 points, move up to fifth in the table.
