FK Žalgiris Vilnius produced a dominant second-half display to defeat FA Šiauliai 3-0 in the 21st round of the Toplyga, ending their two-match winless run ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Conference League qualifier against Montenegrin side Petrovac.

Šiauliai entered the match on a four-game losing streak, having not won a league match since defeating Sūduva on 2 May. Head coach Mantas Kuklys handed Latvian striker Dāvis Ikaunieks his first start since rejoining the club from Kauno Žalgiris, while Žalgiris boss Andrius Skerla made just one change, with Serbian forward Nikola Petkovic replacing veteran Liviu Antal in attack.

Played on a rain-soaked pitch with standing water in several areas, the opening half produced few clear chances. Žalgiris threatened first from a corner, but centre-back Petr Bosančic’s powerful effort was comfortably saved.

The visitors’ best opportunity before the break was an extraordinary triple chance. Bryan Teixeira raced through one-on-one with the goalkeeper but struck the post. The rebound fell straight back to the former Cape Verde international, who somehow hit the woodwork again with an open goal at his mercy, before Stanislav Bilenkyi’s follow-up effort was blocked.

The match was decided during a devastating 16-minute spell after the restart. Žalgiris took the lead when Teixeira burst into the penalty area from the left and delivered a dangerous low cross that Šiauliai defender Lazar Vukovic inadvertently turned into his own net.

Ten minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage from a set piece. After Deividas Šešplaukis headed the ball back into the penalty area following a corner, Petkovic found himself unmarked and headed home from close range.

The third goal arrived in the 63rd minute. Once again Teixeira was heavily involved, driving into the box before forcing a save from goalkeeper Gustas Baliutavičius. The rebound fell kindly for Marko Capan, who reacted quickest to score and complete a convincing victory.

The result gives Žalgiris valuable momentum ahead of Thursday’s European trip to Montenegro, where they will face Petrovac in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

The victory lifts Žalgiris to fifth place in the Toplyga standings. With the table remaining remarkably tight, they now sit just two points behind leaders Džiugas Telšiai. Šiauliai, meanwhile, remain bottom of the table with 13 points, six adrift of the teams above them.
