Žalgiris beat Thór again to reach UEFA Youth League second round
Photo: FK Žalgiris Žalgiris secured a place in the second round of the UEFA Youth League with a 2-0 home win over Thór, completing a 6-3 aggregate victory in their first-round tie. Vakaris Berenta and substitute Daumantas Braškys scored for the Vilnius side, who had won the first leg in Iceland 4-3.
Berenta put Žalgiris ahead in the 41st minute, collecting the ball after Tom Grigaliūnas’s run had been halted and rounding the goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle. The striker had earlier hit the post, while Grigaliūnas struck the woodwork again shortly after half-time.
Braškys doubled the lead in the 78th minute, reacting first after Vakaris Bradūnas’s effort came back off the crossbar. Žalgiris goalkeeper Dominykas Čekavičius kept a clean sheet, and Erik Tučinskij was denied a third goal late on.
Dainius Greviškis’s side will face St Patrick’s Athletic in the national champions path’s second round. The first leg is provisionally scheduled for 28 October in Ireland, with the return in Vilnius on 4 November.
