Welco seal Esiliiga title and promotion with seven-goal win

Welco secured the Esiliiga title and promotion to next season’s Premium liiga with a 7-0 win away to FC Tallinn on Thursday. Alo Bärengrub’s side needed only a point, but repeated their biggest victory of the campaign to finish the job in emphatic fashion.

The Tartu club had moved within reach of the title with a 2-0 victory over nearest challengers Viimsi, followed by a 4-0 win against Elva in front of more than 1,000 supporters. Bärengrub said the final whistle brought a mix of relief and joy. “It is a fantastic feeling,” he said.

Welco scored twice in the opening five minutes against FC Tallinn and led 4-0 at half-time, having also gained a player advantage. They continued to press after the break, completing a seventh consecutive clean sheet across their last four league matches. “There has to be order in the team, and perhaps that is why we got such a big score,” Bärengrub said.

The coach recalled a difficult spell in July, when an 8-1 win over Maardu was followed by three straight defeats. He said the team kept its target in sight, reviewed what needed to change and avoided complacency. Bärengrub, who moved from Tallinn to Tartu for the role, also praised the support of his family and said he was contracted through at least the end of next season.
