Tonybet Virslīga Round 21 saw FK Liepāja claim their first victory under head coach Vladimir Vassiljev, as they comfortably defeated Ogre United 4-0 at home to end a run of three consecutive league defeats.
Liepāja took control from the opening whistle and needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock with one of their finest team goals of the season. Amar Haidara played the ball into Fellipe Vieira inside the penalty area, who immediately laid it off to Joseph Ede Oloko. The Nigerian striker returned the pass first time to Vieira, who calmly finished to complete an excellent flowing move and give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
The home side continued to dominate and doubled their advantage midway through the first half. Following a quick transition, Chovanie Amatkarijo burst down the right wing before delivering a low cross across the face of goal, where Haidara was left with the simple task of tapping into an empty net for 2-0.
Liepāja looked dangerous every time they attacked and came close to adding a third shortly afterwards. Oloko raced onto a long ball and rounded the goalkeeper, but two recovering defenders combined to block his goal-bound effort and deny the league’s leading goalscorer.
The third goal eventually arrived just before the interval. Vladislavs Sorokins produced an inviting cross into the box and Vieira rose highest to power a header into the net, scoring his second goal of the evening and sixth of the Virslīga season.
Ogre United showed greater attacking intent after the break and created a couple of promising opportunities. Summer signing Arsentiy Doroshenko tested Dāvis Ošs with a powerful long-range strike that the Liepāja goalkeeper did well to push away. Another recent arrival, German midfielder Leif Estevez, then came close on the counterattack, curling an effort narrowly wide of the far post.
Despite the visitors’ improved spell, Liepāja remained in complete control and eventually added a fourth goal. Joseph Ede Oloko won his physical battle with the defender, burst clear and calmly finished past the goalkeeper to score his 17th Virslīga goal of the season, further strengthening his position as the league’s leading scorer.
Oloko had further chances to increase both his personal tally and Liepāja’s advantage in the closing stages, but 4-0 proved more than enough as the home side recorded their biggest victory of the campaign.
The convincing win ends Liepāja’s three-match losing streak and consolidates the club’s position in fourth place in the Virslīga standings, while also giving Vladimir Vassiljev his first victory since taking charge.
