Tonybet Virslīga newcomers Ogre United have continued to reinforce their squad ahead of the second half of the season by adding full-backs Jānis Grīnbergs and Aleksandrs Molotkovs from FK Liepāja.
The arrival of Grīnbergs will mark the return after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The 27-year-old has not played a Virslīga match since November 2024 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury before the start of the 2025 season, forcing him to miss the last year and a half.
Grīnbergs joined FK Liepāja at the beginning of 2023 and went on to make 63 appearances for the club, scoring once. Now, in search of regular playing time as he completes his comeback, he has joined bottom-placed Ogre United.
The defender remains the youngest goalscorer in Virslīga history, having scored for Skonto Riga at the age of just 15 years and three months. During his career he has also represented FK Jelgava, FK Metta and RFS, making a total of 126 Virslīga appearances and scoring three goals.
The second addition is 18-year-old Aleksandrs Molotkov, who joins his fifth Virslīga club in just three years. After impressing with BFC Daugavpils during the 2023 season, the young full-back earned a move to FK Liepāja. Although he has yet to make his senior debut for the club, he spent the past season and a half on loan with FK Metta and FK Grobiņa.
Molotkovs featured in nine Virslīga matches for Grobiņa this season before being recalled by Liepāja following the club’s match against FK Tukums 2000 on 15 May, after Grobiņa head coach Oskars Kļava publicly criticised the youngster’s performance.
The move to Ogre United now offers Molotkovs an opportunity to reset his season and fight for regular first-team football.
Ogre United currently sit bottom of the Tonybet Virslīga standings with seven points, nine behind ninth-placed FK Grobiņa. The club return to action tomorrow when they host FK Tukums 2000 in a crucial match at the foot of the table.
