FK Tukums 2000 finally got their season up and running in emphatic style, producing a dominant display to thrash FS Jelgava 5-0 at home in the 10th round of the Tonybet Virslīga.
From the very first minutes, Tukums set the tone with aggressive attacking intent, and it didn’t take long for the breakthrough to arrive. In the 6th minute, Japanese midfielder Shibata rattled the crossbar, but the rebound fell kindly to Rūdolfs Reingolcs, who fired home with his left foot to score his first goal of the season – and only his second in the Virslīga.
Things went from bad to worse for Jelgava just five minutes later in calamitous fashion. A long ball forward caused confusion between defender Alans Kangars and goalkeeper Adam Dvorak, with Kangars attempting a headed backpass without realizing his keeper had already come off his line. The result was an unfortunate own goal that doubled Tukums’ lead.
Tukums continued to pour forward, and while Joseph Ede Oloko and Leoni both had chances to extend the advantage, the third goal arrived in the 21st minute. Bogdans Samoilovs unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, leaving Dvorak with no chance and effectively putting the game out of reach before halftime.
Facing a three-goal deficit, Jelgava head coach Aleksandrs Basovs reacted with drastic measures, making a triple substitution already in the first half. The changes briefly injected some life into the visitors, who managed their first shot on goal shortly after, but the damage had already been done.
Jelgava showed more urgency after the break and even created a couple of promising moments. Their best chance came early in the second half, but Tukums goalkeeper Ivans Baturins produced an excellent save to preserve the clean sheet. Leoš Prior later struck the post as frustration continued to mount for the visitors.
As Jelgava pushed forward in search of a consolation, they left themselves exposed at the back – and Tukums made them pay late on. In the 86th minute, top scorer Joseph Ede Oloko got in on the act, calmly finishing to make it 4-0 and register his sixth goal of the season. Just three minutes later, the Nigerian forward struck again, racing through on goal and finishing one-on-one to cap off a miserable evening for Jelgava.
The emphatic victory sees Tukums climb level on points with Jelgava, overtaking them in the standings with both sides now sitting on eight points. More importantly, it marks Tukums’ first win of the campaign and could serve as a turning point in their season.
Tukums will look to build on this momentum on Thursday when they host Ogre United, while Jelgava will aim to bounce back a day earlier at home against Super Nova.
