Tonybet Virslīga Matchday 16 saw FK Liepāja return to the league’s top four after a convincing 3-0 home victory over Tukums 2000 who for the first time this season did not score a single goal in the game.

Liepāja started the match aggressively and created danger already in the opening minutes through Amar Haidara, Iļja Korotkovs and Kyvon Leidsman, forcing Tukums goalkeeper Ivans Baturins into several early interventions.

The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute after Leidsman burst through on goal before being brought down inside the penalty area by Martins Štāls. Referee immediately pointed to the spot and Fellipe Vieira calmly converted the penalty despite Baturins getting a hand to the ball. For the Brazilian it was already a third goal in four matches.

Tukums still managed to create several dangerous moments of their own during the first half. Bogdans Samoilovs, Rene Baumanis and Ruslans Deružinskis all tested Liepāja goalkeeper Dāvis Ošs, who delivered a confident performance between the posts.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 37th minute after a well-worked attacking move between Haidara and Leidsman. Baturins initially denied Haidara, but the rebound fell kindly for Leidsman who reacted quickest to score his fourth goal in the last five matches.

Liepāja continued controlling the match after halftime and effectively secured the victory in the 58th minute. Following an assist from Andriy Korobenko, Djibril Gueye cut inside from the right and finished clinically into the far corner to make it 3-0.

Tukums attempted to respond with a quadruple substitution shortly afterwards and nearly found a way back into the match in the 74th minute when Bogdans Samoilovs broke through one-on-one against Ošs, but the Liepāja goalkeeper won the duel with an important save.

The result also ended one of the more impressive attacking streaks in the league this season. Prior to this match Tukums had scored in every single one of their previous 15 Virslīga games.

Tukums meanwhile were without league top scorer Joseph Ede Oloko, who had scored 14 goals this season, as well as Rūdolfs Meļķis. Both players are owned by Liepāja and were also absent during the clubs’ first meeting earlier this season.

The victory lifts Liepāja back into the top four of the Tonybet Virslīga standings ahead of the international break. After the national team window Liepāja will host Super Nova, while Tukums 2000 are set to face BFC Daugavpils.
