The battle between two of the Toplyga title contenders ended without a winner as Sūduva and TransINVEST played out a 0-0 draw in Marijampolė in the final fixture of the 21st round.

The two sides also shared the points in their previous meeting on 6 May, while Sūduva won the first encounter between the clubs earlier this season. The latest stalemate extends Sūduva’s unbeaten run to 10 league matches and keeps them at the summit of the standings.

Sūduva made the brighter start and created the first meaningful chance after just five minutes. Faustas Steponavičius skipped past his marker inside the penalty area before testing goalkeeper Julius Virvilas, who was equal to the effort.

The hosts came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock before half-time. Žygimantas Baltrūnas whipped a dangerous ball into the six-yard box, where Steponavičius disrupted Virvilas’ attempt to gather it. The loose ball fell kindly to Franklin Tangiri, but Dominykas Barauskas produced a superb goal-line clearance to prevent what looked like a certain goal.

Steponavičius remained Sūduva’s biggest attacking threat and forced another comfortable save from Virvilas before the interval as the visitors survived sustained pressure.

Sūduva continued to dictate the game after the restart. Early in the second half, Titas Milašius delivered an inviting cross towards Tangiri, but the striker failed to make contact from an excellent position.

The hosts continued to push for a winner. Steponavičius squandered another promising opportunity in the 65th minute, firing well wide despite having both time and space inside the penalty area. Shortly afterwards on the other side one of the few TransINVEST chances of the game when Edvinas Girdvainis headed off target from Xabi Auzmendi’s cross.

TransINVEST defended resolutely throughout the second half and managed to keep the league leaders at bay. Both teams attempted long-range efforts in the closing stages through Ibrahim Seck and Iker Bilbao respectively, but neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled.

Although neither side found the breakthrough, the result keeps both clubs firmly in the title race.

Sūduva return to the top of the Toplyga standings with 30 points and have now gone 10 consecutive league matches without defeat. TransINVEST remain third on 29 points, just one point behind the leaders, while also holding a game in hand.
