Tammeka midfielder Amijekori: “I had no plan B, C or D”

Tammeka midfielder Joachim Amijekori says he has been willing to move anywhere for football, having pursued the game since childhood. The 22-year-old, who was born in French Guiana and moved to France aged eight, is now enjoying life in Tartu after a career that has taken him across several countries.

“I had no plan B, C or D. I only had football,” he told Soccernet, recalling how he answered teachers who asked what he wanted to do when he grew up. “They told me football was not a job, but I kept saying I only wanted to become a footballer. And, as you can see, I now make my living from it.”

Amijekori began playing about a year after arriving in France, joining a small club in his hometown before moving to FC Metz. He spent around two and a half years there, taking part in tournaments against clubs including Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich. He remembers playing against Barcelona when Gavi was also on the pitch, at about under-13 or under-14 level.

After Metz, he joined smaller local sides, including Amnéville. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, he moved to Luxembourg and joined Racing FC Union’s under-17 team. Amijekori said he put pressure on himself to reach the senior side, telling himself he would quit football if he failed to make the step up.

He said Tammeka’s recent break came at a good time after a demanding run of fixtures. “Over the last month and a half, we played about 12 matches,” he said. “It was good to have a few days off and get some proper rest.”
