In the opening match of the fourth round of the Tonybet Virslīga, SK Super Nova withstood early second-half pressure from Ogre United to secure a 2-1 victory – its second of the season – lifting the side, at least temporarily, into second place in the standings.

Coming into the match, the two teams were heading in different emotional directions. Ogre United had suffered a heartbreaking last-gasp defeat at home to FK Liepāja before the international break, while Super Nova had handed head coach Maksims Rafaļskis his first-ever Virslīga win with a victory over FK Tukums 2000.

The visitors made a flying start. Just two minutes in, Super Nova won the ball high up the pitch and quickly combined in attack. Senegalese forward Ndiaye Pathe found Agris Glaudāns inside the box, and the 23-year-old calmly finished into the far corner to open his account for the season.

The same duo combined again midway through the first half – this time in reversed roles. After a strong central run from another Senegalese player, Bamba, the ball was worked out to Glaudāns on the right flank. His cross into the penalty area found Ndiaye Pathe, who beat his marker and managed to steer the ball into the net to double Super Nova’s lead.

Ogre struggled to get going in the first half, creating their only semi-threats from set pieces, while goalkeeper Sergejs Vilkovs remained largely untested.

However, the hosts came out with renewed energy after the break. Early in the second half, attacking Markuss Kalniņš was left completely unmarked on the left side and fired a shot into the near corner past Vilkovs after a great cross from Dāvis Vējkrīgers to pull one back.

Despite the momentum shift, Ogre were unable to build sustained pressure. Instead, Super Nova looked more likely to score again, with both Bamba and Japanese defender Rikuto Iida going close. Ogre goalkeeper Ņikita Parfjonovs produced solid saves to keep his team in the game.

In the end, Super Nova held firm to claim all three points, moving up to second place with seven points from four matches. Meanwhile, Ogre United remain in search of their first win of the season, sitting ninth with just one point, ahead only of BFC Daugavpils, who have opened their campaign with three consecutive defeats.
