Grobiņa beat Jelgava and match last season’s away win total

FK Grobiņa continued their strong start to the Tonybet Virslīga season by securing a 1-0 away win over FS Jelgava, punishing an early mistake to claim their second victory of the campaign.

The decisive moment came in the 14th minute, when a costly error in Jelgava’s half changed the course of the match. David Holoubek was dispossessed by Japanese midfielder Hirotaka Yamada, who quickly played the ball forward to Artjoms Puzirevskis. The forward made no mistake, calmly converting to give Grobiņa the lead.

Jelgava enjoyed more possession throughout the first half but struggled to turn it into meaningful chances, allowing the visitors to go into the break with a narrow 1-0 advantage.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Jelgava pushing forward in search of an equaliser. They created several opportunities, particularly through Filip Hašek and Gļebs Žaleiko, but were repeatedly denied by Grobiņa goalkeeper Vjačeslavs Kudrjavcevs, who delivered a composed performance between the posts.

As the match progressed, Grobiņa focused on defensive discipline, absorbing pressure and slowing the game down when needed. Jelgava came closest late on, with multiple attempts inside the box and a series of set-pieces, but were unable to find a breakthrough.

After five minutes of added time and a tense finish, the final whistle confirmed a hard-fought 1-0 win for Grobiņa.

For Oskars Kļava’s side, it marked their second away victory of the season, already matching their total from the entire previous campaign, when they managed just two wins in 18 away matches.
