SK Super Nova returned to winning ways in the Tonybet Virslīga after defeating Ogre United 3-1 at home, ending their three-match winless streak while also recording a second victory over the league newcomers this season.
The home side started the match with greater intensity and took the lead in the 11th minute. After building pressure early on, Agris Glaudāns found space inside the penalty area and calmly finished into the bottom corner to put Super Nova ahead.
Ogre United attempted to respond and came close through Kaito Kumakura, whose dangerous effort after a ricochet hit the post. The visitors eventually found an equaliser in fortunate circumstances midway through the first half. In the 26th minute a cross from Kristers Čudars resulted in Super Nova defender Jegors Cīrulis accidentally diverting the ball into his own net, bringing Ogre level at 1-1.
Despite the setback, Super Nova continued looking more dangerous in attack. However, the next big opportunity fell to Ogre United when Markuss Kalniņš found himself in a partial one-on-one situation, only to see his effort denied by Dāvis Veisbuks.
That miss eventually proved costly for the visitors. Nikita Barkovskis, who had already looked threatening on several occasions, restored Super Nova’s lead just before halftime. Following a corner kick in the 42nd minute, the ball fell kindly for the midfielder outside the crowded penalty area, and his left-footed strike found the net through traffic to make it 2-1.
The second half became more physical and fragmented, with several interruptions and tactical substitutions from both sides. Ogre United nearly equalised again in the 54th minute when Haralds Silagailis struck the post after a quick attacking move involving Kumakura.
But again the missed chance by the visitors cost them as just minutes later Super Nova earned a penalty after Mārcis Oss was fouled inside the area by Koki Hayashi. Valērijs Lizunovs made no mistake, calmly converting into the bottom corner to extend the lead to 3-1.
From there Super Nova controlled the game more comfortably. Ogre still produced several attempts through Markuss Kalniņš, Kristers Čudars and Tomass Mickevičs, but goalkeeper Dāvis Veisbuks handled the pressure confidently while the home defence limited the visitors to mostly long-range efforts.
Late chances from Mārtiņš Lormanis and Čudars failed to trouble the scoreline as Super Nova closed out an important victory.
The result ends Super Nova’s three-match winless run and strengthens their position in the middle part of the Virslīga table, while Ogre United continue to look for their first historic win in the Virslīga.
