Toplyga leaders FK Džiugas Telšiai came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw away to FC Hegelmann in Matchday 20, extending their lead at the top of the table after a match in Kaunas district.
The visitors made the brighter start and created the first dangerous opportunities of the evening. Argentine forward Iker Scotto was first to threaten, firing narrowly over the crossbar from distance, before league top scorer Ronald Sobowale burst into the penalty area only to see his effort denied by Hegelmann goalkeeper Rokas Bagdonavičius, who reacted well with his feet.
Hegelmann gradually settled into the match and began creating danger through a series of crosses into the penalty area, although the hosts struggled to turn those deliveries into clear-cut chances during the opening period.
The home side came much closer shortly after the break. Vilius Armanavičius was inches away from breaking the deadlock when his strike crashed against the post, but the midfielder made no mistake with his next opportunity. In the 62nd minute, Armanavičius collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and fired a precise shot into the corner of the net to put Hegelmann 1-0 ahead.
Trailing for only the second time in their last six league matches, Džiugas responded positively and found an equaliser eleven minutes later. Scotto’s volley was blocked inside the box, but the loose ball looped kindly into the path of Sobowale. The Irish-Nigerian forward reacted quickest and struck the dropping ball first time into the net, scoring his eighth league goal of the season and bringing the visitors level at 1-1.
Both teams had excellent chances to snatch all three points during the closing stages. Džiugas came closest when Sobowale rattled the post with a free-kick from a tight angle, while at the other end Hegelmann substitute Domas Slendzoka, making his first appearance since 11 April, narrowly failed to connect properly with a dangerous free-kick delivered by Esmilis Kaušinis, sending his header just wide of the far post.
Neither side could find a late winner, meaning the points were shared for the second time between the clubs this season. The draw keeps Džiugas Telšiai at the top of the Toplyga standings, while Hegelmann remain seventh in the table despite extending their unbeaten run.
