Riga FC Women became the first Latvian club to progress beyond the first qualifying round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after a 4-1 win over Wrexham Women in Wales on Saturday.
The Latvian champions trailed 1-0 at half-time, but turned the final on its head early in the second period. Minami Oi levelled before Kumba Brima put Riga in front four minutes later.
Laura Kallase added a third to give Riga breathing space, and Šiori Kato completed the scoring late on to seal the title in the mini-tournament.
Riga reached the final by beating Northern Irish champions Glentoran Women 4-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final, while Wrexham defeated Armenia’s Pyunik Women 4-2. Only the group winners advanced to the second qualifying round.
Riga will face Danish hosts Køge Women in the semi-finals of the second-round tournament on 5 August. The other semi-final will be contested by Lithuania’s Gintra and Scotland’s Heart of Midlothian, with placing matches scheduled for 8 August.
The teams finishing second and third in the second-round tournaments will move into qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup, the continent’s secondary club competition.
